Wright Cycle Company/Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

Trip Theme - History of Aviation

Trip Overview/Things to do

This trip is a scenic, beautiful route through Riverscape and downtown. Our biking group rated this route as about a four out of five in difficulty.

For this trip, we chose to ride to the historical Wright Cycle Company to learn about local aviation history and the Wright Brothers. The Wright Brothers were born and worked in Dayton. Afterwards, we visited the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. In this park we watched the movie On Great White Wings, which was about the story of the Wright Brothers and how they built their Flyer, which was the first practical airplane to fly. We also viewed several exhibits of aviation and the brothers within the park.

These exhibits taught us about the struggles the Wright Brothers went through to build their plane. One interesting thing we learned about the Wright Brothers was that they had no formal education in engineering. They made the plane with their own self-taught knowledge.

There were a lot of sights to see throughout this trip. We rode and ate by the river and passed several historic buildings. While eating at the river, Trevor noticed his tires were very low on air, so he borrowed my hand pump to refill it. Remember: Always check your tire pressure before riding!

Directions

To get to the Wright Cycle Company, we exited North out of the school and turned left into the Iron Horse trail. We continued on until the Creekside trail and kept right, then left until we turned left onto the Mad River trail. We followed the trail until we reached a closed trail. We turned into downtown and then turned onto 3rd Street. We followed 3rd Street until we reached the historic district/cycle company.

Most Memorable Experience

The most memorable experience we had from this trip was when we stopped to eat at Riverscape. When we stopped to eat, a man by the nickname "Jersey Joe" came down and sang in a tent by the park. He was very good at singing and playing his guitar and it was very fun to meet him.

  1. I learned that I have to wear more clothes when biking in 65 degree (or less) weather. Several parts of my body got numb from the amount of cold wind blowing against me when we biked on this day and so I contracted a cold the next day. I ALSO learned that a lot of the tests the wright brothers conducted were done in Ohio (Ohio fields were used to fly planes), not just in Kitty Hawk.

  2. When we went here I learned that it is not fun biking in the rain! I should have definitely worn more clothes because I almost froze! It was fun though.

  3. I learned that the Wright brothers did not go to college and were self taught engineers.

What I learned through this trip is that the Wright brothers started the era of aviation when they invented the first working airplane. At first the Wright Flyer was just an experiment, but turned out to be a devotion for the brothers. Their invention made the brothers famous world-wide. This is why the Wright brothers are famous to their home state of Ohio.

  6. I learned that the Wright Brothers actually started out with making printers for the print press as their first "engineering experience."

  7. Donovan Jones say-- I learned that the wright brothers worked on bikes as well. they were not just all about making planes, also they were engineers that taught themselves. Plus the wright brothers patented their plane in the end when they finished it all.

  8. I learned that I could not go as hard as I usually do because this ride was the longest that we have ever gone on. I thought that I would be able to go as hard because the trail that we were going on was flat for the most part.

  9. i learned in this trip that bikes were a huge craze in the time of Orville and Wilbur wright and that biking in city traffic is terrifying especially in intersections.

From this trip, I learn that the Wright Brother received the "Metal of Honor" for the creation of their practical aircraft and I learn that Orville Wright lived till 1971 and got to see all the advancements or flight made during the 20th century.

I learned 3 things during this trip:
    1. Whenever you bike somewhere, you have to bike back. Even if its raining. And cold. Which sucks.
    2. The wright brothers built most of their planes from bike parts that were designed on a larger scale. THats pretty cool if you think about it.
    3. Biking 20 miles is do-able, but your butt is going to be sore, and you might dies halfway through. #UnFit

  15. I learned to look everywhere before moving from a stop sign. The bike path that we were on had a part in it where a road crossed it. There were two lanes on both sides. I saw that there were no cars on the right and the car on the left had stopped. I started to start pedal forward and then realized that a bus, in the second lane was coming staight at me. Thankfully, nothing bas happened. Always remember to look both ways, and at all of the laned before moving from a stop sign.

  17. I learned that the Wright brothers had competition in building the first practical airplane and that the race for the airplane was worldwide.

  18. Trevor Edmonds- I learned a lot about the struggles that the wright brothers went through, the frustrations they had, and how they solved their problems with what they knew!

  19. I learned that the wright brothers had so many difficulties making their first aircraft. I also thought it was amazing to be in a building that they were in. (Oksana Tangeman)
